Some tips for winter riding…

Single speeds are great – low maintenance with a predictable power transfer.

Lower your tyre pressure a little if you are comfortable doing that.

Dress warm, especially with socks and gloves – keep your core and extremities warm.

Wear winter boots and switch to flat pedals, particularly for leisure riding and cycle commuting.

Water proof and thermal clothing are obviously useful and don’t forget base layers and mudguards although I personally don’t like them – they are fiddly, drag and get clogged up…still they keep your bottom dry! Maybe try a light weight transferable set or a splash / ass guard if you’re like me!

Dry gloves, buff, hats and boots when you get to work if cycle commuting, often it’s warm at the back or on top of your PC – don’t cause an electrical fire!

When riding in snow, I often prefer to ride in the fresh snow rather than packed down, icy and hard snow, it’s better for traction, although you may have to regularly stop to bounce the snow off your brakes.

Lights, visible gear and cautious confidence all help!

Have fun…keep riding!
