Cycling training company Go Velo reached another milestone as its entered its 14th year offering cycling training for children and adults across the UK.
In July, Go Velo became a teenager with 13 years of cycle training. And what is amazing is that a number of their staff were participants on courses over the years.
Within the Go Velo team of 39 instructors, nine completed Bikeability in school, eight through Go Velo and with five from the same primary school. This history and continuity in training, personnel and relationships enables Go Velo to offer cycle training in a personable, relatable and fun manner.
Founder of Go Velo, Kirsti Grayson commented: “At Go Velo we love to employ local people who have a passion for cycling. It’s amazing that so many of our staff have experienced our courses first hand, as participants, it gives them real empathy with the rider, the school or organisation taking part and with the local community.
“Our young instructors really engage and empathize with our riders. They can remember what it’s like to cycle on the road for the first time and understand how important it is to make the sessions fun and inspiring.”
Karen Wood from Laneshaw Bridge Primary School said ”We are thrilled to be able to see our former pupils, who will be wonderful role models for our current students, sharing their wealth of knowledge and skills in what is an essential life skill and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Instructing the next generation is an incredibly responsible role and we look forward to meeting up with the young instructors.”
The instructors range in age from some having just completed A Levels to University Students and those having completed their education and are now looking for a career in cycling and working with young people.
The flexibility of the role enables people to study, have other interests and develop excellent interpersonal skills.
Megan Hargreaves, 21 from Rossendale is studying at Durham University and instructs Bikeability for Go Velo during the holidays. She said: “I remember doing Bikeability in Primary School with Go Velo and absolutely loved it, now I love it even more working as a Bikeability instructor for the same company”
Ciara Gostling, 19, from Blackburn and studying at Manchester University quotes: “I have loved cycling all my life so doing Bikeability with Go Velo in 2013 was an awakening for me. To get the opportunity to now work for Go Velo is amazing and its so much fun to pass my love of cycling onto the younger generation”
Go Velo’s aim is to inspire people with a love of cycling by giving them the confidence and skills to cycle more often. Bikeability cycle training is a fun, exciting and practical programme promoting the use of bicycles as an enjoyable form of transport.
